State law

crazycodykadunk Apr 26, 2004 04:24 PM

i was talking to a friend of mine who works at a pet store he said that my anaconda was illigal to keep in my state. i have 3 books on reptile laws in my state and other states and it did not say eny thing on anacondas. it did say that there are no crocodilians or venimous reptiles of eny kind. just to be on the safe side i called up fish and game and it turns out they r trying to restrict the possesion of green and yellow anacondas and i had to reregister for a permit instead of waiting till december when i would have to renew my old permits (for other animals i own)and ad my anaconda on to it.i live in new jersey. are there eny restictions on your anacondas or neeed special papers to keep them?

I live in Texas, we can own just about any reptile, and most mammals also, except for Raccoons, wierd, huh.

I live in Texas too. I've never heard of the racoon law though. Sounds like a law that would be passed in Texas though.

It is very rare to find a restriction on an actual snake species, rather if it is venomous, endangered(or threatened), and the size. In Illinois it is hard to even find someone that knows the laws. I called the fish and game and the department of agriculture and neither of them know anything. One source I kind of trust is a person with a usda liscense for exotics. for this he needs to give a certain amout of educational shows per year and he needs to keep at least 6 different non reptile exotics. He told me in this state you can own snakes for your private owndership up to 14 ft(why 14 feet i have no idea). (some city limits have their own regulations). A store cannot sell a snake over 6 feet but for some reason there is a way to get around that and sell 8 foot snakes but I have no idea what it is. I udes to work in a pet store and i can tell you from experience that even owners and managers don't know anything about this stuff and can feed you through a huge load of bs.

also..if you don't have any problems like the snake eating your neighbor or just bad neighbors that call the police every time they hear a noise...you will not have the police beating on your door to take your snake away...just be carefull with health because a vet bill is proof. This state (IL) is also kinda bad with strict laws because i have no idea why venomoid is illegal anywhere and it is here.

Everyone should also remember that most laws against reptile ownership usually are the result of some idiot doing something stupid with an animal that they probably shouldn't have to begin with.
Just a reminder to everyone to please be responsible so that we all can enjoy our hobby.

wow u guys r lucky not having to deal with laws. we used to be abel to keep crocs in my state till some stupid people started letting them go all over. i thought that this was roomer till i saw a 5 foot alligator one day when i was catching snapping turtles. which shocked me and the first thought that came to my mind was "JUMP OUT THE BOAT AND CATCH IT" i did jump out the boat after it but it got away i saw it 7 more times ofter that then it disapeard i figured it went down streem or some one else cought it and i did not here. new jersey has some strange laws on mammals as well mostly on racoons y that it i dont no i guess people in every state dont like racoons or some thing?? lol

Im in Colorado. Colorado doesnt allow ANY venemous species, native or exotic, i wouldnt own an exotic one, but it wont stop me from keeping a native maybe sometime in the future. And NO snake what so ever over 6 foot! thats just a load of bs there, my Boa will get over 6', African Rock will get well over 6', i plan on owning many species getting over 6'. The basic guidelines though, just dont go parading a snake around outside if it is illegal, keep them responsibly, and what they dont know wont hurt them.

We have a constrictor ban in the county I live in. You are able to get a permit at a small cost.
