Red-tail boa giving birth w/ possible problems......

eholtz Apr 26, 2004 07:30 PM

My female red-tail was breed the end of October 2003, yesterday she started to give birth. I noticed her mid afternoon with 3 still born babies (still in sacs) and 2 slugs. She was uncomfortable the rest of the day, but no more babies. This morning, still no more babies but was curled up on the heat again. Tonight when I got home from work she was still coiled up on the heat with no more activity. I moved her to change the paper she was on and she seems to be active and uncomfortable. I have no idea what to do, she is still very large and obviously not done. What should I do for her??? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Eddie, There are a number of things you can do. There are also some signs of retained babies and slugs. This happens a LOT more then we thing. Every year I have ONE female that has slugs or babies, and doesn't get all the slugs out. IF they don't come it, it can be fatal, and most of the time it is fatal. I have heard of some that hold the slugs still untill the following breeding season and then pushing them out. That also happened here 1 time. That is the exception though. Most often, some of the slugs will burst in the ovary and that slug material is sooo sticky it gets stuck and causes the other slugs to not come out. You HAVE to get those out. A profesional vet will do this. Scot Stahl has done this for me. He is the VERY BEST. He is in Virgina, and you can find his ad in reptiles magazine. It is pricy, but if the snake is worth it, do it.

NOW, here are signs of RETAINED babies or slugs. The female will STILL act gravid. Like you mentioned. Coiled up in the heat position or near heat. They WON'T accept food. Most females are Ferocious eaters one to two days after birth. Offer her a Dead Rat. See if she will take it. If she does not, then you probably have stuck slugs or babies. I would take her to get an x-ray or ultrasound. X rays can be harmful for babies, but I have had an X ray and had live babies fine. X rays can definatley determine if there are babies or slugs in the lower half of the snake. Once you do that you may see that she is Clean, or has Sluggs or Babies. Any reptile vet or Exotic Vet can do the X ray.

IF she still has stuck babies/slugs, then you NEED to get them out. Ocytocin can work and it has worked successfully on a Boa for me. One dose or two can do the trick. This will cause her to have more contractions and if she has stuck ones this MAY help. IF it is stuck Slugs, oxytocin doesn't really do the job, but you should definalty see your female go into contractions. IF the oxcytocin doesn't work, then you should have a vet that KNOWS how get them out. A good vet can get them out and SAVE the ovaries. Un unexperienced vet may do it but the chances of her breeding again are SLIM.

Ocytocin will work, however, you don't want to give her more then TWO doses. Scott Stahl told me that it is VERY hard on the ovaries to have contractions if they are stuck, and if they don't come out you are just causing her more stress and pain of labor. It Also can ruin the ovarys. So, BE CAREFUL.

I know this is a lot to ponder. Just relax and hope for the best. Why females do this?? I don't know. How come females give slugss??? I WISH I KNEW. I don't though. Hope this helps. Good Luck, Jeremy Stone

I will try to feed her. Is it possible that she is done after 3 still babies and 2 slugs? Is it possible that she will finish up in a day or two? What do you consider pricy? I am no where near Virgina, I would assume that you can't ship them like this.

It is very possible that she only had 3 babies and 3 slugs. Two years ago, I had an anerythrsitic that gave previous litters in the 20's and 30's. She was very old. Her last litter was 2 years ago. 3 babies and 4 slugs. She was 8 feet and weighed 28 pounds. So, the size of that litter is DEFINATLEY possible.

Price?? Between 400 to 1000 dollars is the cost of Surgery, meds, etc......

Yes, you can ship it to the Vet. IF you don't have a good vet, you can ship her. Just do it quickly. I don't live in Virginia, and I send the snake to Scott Stahl in Virginia.

Hope this helps. Jeremy Stone

If not and you read this in the morning, call me at home or at the shop after 11.

I dont know how much experience Dr B has with this, but he could start the process. I will call him first thing in the morning and see what he can do for you. I assume shes a big common right? If thats the case, I would just go to dr b, and try and save the mother. Dont worry about the ovaries, babies, ect.

It is great for one of the biggest most successfull breeders to take the time to make such a detailed post. The experiences you have had and your willingness to share that information is beneficial to all of us. Your input is truely appreciated.

Jeremy its fitting you were able to give Eddie the info you did. Im not sure if hes ever called you or not, but I assure you Eddie and his wife Jennifer are two of the GREATEST PEOPLE your ever going to meet in this business. I have the pleasure of dealing with them on a consistent basis, as they are "locals".

So I for one Jeremy personally want to thank you for helping a good friend of mine in this situation. Im sure if I know Eddie hes just been freaking about this all day.
