Weekend feeding shedule for baby tincs

Sillygirl Apr 26, 2004 08:12 PM

Can to baby tincs go to days without food (minus the springs tails to snack on in the terrarium) or should I leave them some kind of food?

I've thought about leaving a film case with fruit flies in the 5 gallon terrarium over the weekend with enough to get them though the weekend and a small hole in the top so they dont' swarm the tank all at once but don't know if any one else has tried that idea or not and if it worked or if it was even necessary.

They are at work in my office is why I ask. I missed my stress relief. Thanks for the help.

Below is the terrarium I built for my desk and the frogs are two baby Surinam cobalt tincs.

hi
the tank looks nice. about the flys, if you had them in a container with a hole they would pretty much all crawl out at the same time. then that many flys could stress the little ones if the flys were to crawl over them.
about the tincs, they are babys so they need to be able to eat a lot more than say an adult. i have never used springtails but i guess it would be better than nothing.
i guess i sort of answered your question.

What most people do is set up vacation cultures. The trick with this is that you have to time when they will be producing a lot. You would do like what you were thinking with the film canister. You would set up a culture, then when you are leaving pop a hole in the top big enough for the flies to get out. The culture should be producing flies before you leave them. The culture should produce good for about a week. Make sure the container is opaque though, otherwise the frogs will try and eat the flies through the plastic. I personally wouldn't trust my frogs on this method for a full week though. If you are only leaving for a weekend though, you can just overfeed before you leave. I would feed about twice what you normally would and then just stick a slice of banana or two in there. The extra flies should gather on the banana slices. Then just throw away the banana when you get home. Hope this helps

No this is something I'm going to have to do on a regular basis. These frogs are at work and I don't work on the Sat or Sun. But the slice of bannana was a good idea. I'll give that a try and see how that works. Thanks.
