Need some help

puzzledprncess Apr 26, 2004 09:36 PM

I recently purchased a leopard gecko. After looking on the internet for some more information about geckos I began to believe that Phaedrus was as old as I was led to believe he was. He seems to be a week or two old. In addition it appears to me that he is a different breed of gecko, tremper albino gecko. Here is a picture of what Phaedrus looks like, If anyone knows approximately how old he is and what type of gecko i would be grateful for the input.

That is an albino leopard gecko. In the pic, you are feeding him large freezedried crickets?? Feed him small live crickets and live meal worms dusted with calcium supplement and a good leo multivitimin. This pic and your question scare me.......

Sorry if my question scared you but the pet seller sold a lot of wrong [bleep] for the gecko. They sold us a incandesent light bulb to warm the cage and they sold us sand for it. In addition they didn't even sell us an albino gecko!!!! So I wasn't sure what to do or to think! Do you know about how old he is because about the substrate to put into his cage? The reason I am asking because they sold us sand and I know you are not suppose to put geckos under the age of 6 months in sand because of the geckos eating the sand.

You should not be using sand for any age of leopard gecko. Your best bet right now is either paper towels or repticarpet. Use smaller crickets and/or mealworms as well, since those crickets look way too big for him to be eating. How long is he?

Phaedrus is about 3 inches to about 3 1/2 inches in length. Do you know about how old he may be? Thanks for the advice. What if he doesn't eat mealworms or small crickets? Then what do you suggest I feed him?

Whats the problem with using a incadescent light bulb for warming his cage?I use them on my 3 leos.

The light the store oringally gave us was more of a white light bulb and it was just to brite for the gecko because he would never go to that side of the tank and when I asked someone about it they suggested using a red basking light instead. The store where I bought the albino gecko has been wrong about everything so far. The only thing I need now is to know how old my gecko, Phaedrus, is.

if you want to see a picture of Phaedrus go to this

While I do not know much about baby leopard geckos, I would guess that he is about a month old. I just got three baby leos as well, I am not to sure about their ages either. They look very young, almost comparable to hatchling pictures.

I would also recommend taking your baby of sand (just use paper towel until you find something better looking), but mostly I would recommend throwing out the can-o-crickets you are feeding him. I posted a long post about this on the leopard gecko forum, I'll post it again here.

If you post this picture on the leopard gecko forum you will probably get more estimates on his age and morph. For some reason it's more popular over there.

From my own experiences and in my own opinion, I STRONGLY advise NOT using the canned food. My reasons are:

1. You cannot gutload the food.

2. They are very boring for your leo.

3. They loose many of the vital nutrients after they have died, I do not have proof but I have been told by many people.

4. Unless you freeze them, one can should only be kept for 3-4 days (I have had them mould that fast). When I first started them, I e-mailed the distributor about them going moldy so fast. Their response was, “would you eat a can of tuna if it had been in the fridge that long?” (I swear to God).

5. They are very expensive, well at least I paid $10 a can.

6. Your one little baby leo will never eat them before they go bad.

7. When I froze them they always became freezer burned.

8. I started to keep them on hand in case I ran out of live food, I became lazy and used them as a staple diet.

9. My leo became so used to them he stopped eating live food.

10. My leo, EXTREMELY slowly, stopped eating.

It's your own choice, this is just my personal experience. I believe feeding the canned crickets was my biggest mistake, if there was anything I could have done different with Rex (RIP), that would be it. I would recommend using sand before I would recommend using canned food.

most babies will go after live crickets. Heck, if he's eating the can o crickets right now, live ones will definitely capture his attention. Ditto to everything that was said above this post. You can not gutload can o crickets and they are not as nutritious. Plus, it'll give the little one plenty of exercise chasing after them. Whatever you do, get him on paper towels, buy some little live crickets, about 3/8 of an inch long, and as for lighting, an incandescent will work as long as it isn't too bright. Albinos are very sensitive to light. Maybe you should try one of the "moonlight" or "red" bulbs out on the market. Sometimes, even a strong incandescent (not flourescent whatever you do) blacklight will work to heat things up a bit. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

if he is chowing on the dead ones, live ones don't stand a chance. When I used canned crickets I had to use a vibrating rock to make them bounce.
