Rubbermaid question

ew1074 Apr 27, 2004 12:51 AM

My heatpad gets pretty hot. It wont melt a rubbermaid will it? I've got thick paper towels in the container and its keeping the temp ok, but i'm worried about the bottom of the container melting. Rubbermaids are just plastic. My heatpad sais for use on glass tanks only. I dont know how else to heat the rubbermaid though, unless heat from a heatlamp would still penetrate through a solid lid. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I cut a hole in the lid of my rubbermaid thing and then screened it off for a heat lamp. it's working well for me.

well...right now its just sort of paper clipped on....lol He can't reach it anyway...it just makes me feel better and helps keep crickets in...lol I'd like to staple it on...but a regular stapler doesn't have enough force, and I don't have a staple gun...

Is the screen a permanent fixture on the lid, meaning do you remove it or want to leave it on all the time? If you want it on so that it can't come off and the screen is flush with the edges of the lid, you could silicone it in place. The only thing with silicone is the smell whiles its curing. You'd have to move the gecko away from it for a few days at least.

P.S. does your gecko ever get his nails caught in the yarn?

I do want the screen to be permanent...but I really dont' have anywhere to put bronx for a few days...As far as nails getting caught in yarn...Spitfire's only had that thing for 2 nights now...but I haven't noticed any problems...he was climbing around on it last night and seemed fine. I honestly didn't even think that he might get caught until yesterday when nevin suggested the problems with repticarpet. I don't think he's going to have any problems though...it's not very "loopy" and I think he'd be able to get loose pretty easily even if he did get caught.

Hi,

Ya you'd need to find a place for him for a few days to do the silicone thing. As long as he can't get out i think its fine the way it is I'm very happy to hear no nails have been caught on the log. I think thats a nifty idea and would like to do something like that for my geckos. Usually though i do spend the money and buy an actual log......lol. We did have a nasty storm the other day which knocked down some nice branches but i'm not exactly sure how i'd disinfect them....the oven idea would work except this is wood lol and wood does burn HAHAHA.

Hi

I once took a rubbermaid sweater container and I cut both the square panels out of the lid of it, then I got some screening and cut it to the size of those squares, leaving a little extra. I then got some really thin wood strips and cut four pieces out to go around the perimeter of the screening for both sides and the same thing with the wood for the underside and then I hammered short nails through the wood on the top that went through the wood on the underside, but didn't stick out so that a gecko could ever come into contact with it. It is very strong and durable and would hold a heat lamp on it if necessary.

It also makes a good quarantine tank to.

If your heat pad is so hot that it melts the rubbermaid container then it is definitely too hot for your leo. What you need to do is test it out without the leo in there. If I were you I would go with heat tape, but then you would have to get a thermostat.
Some one might have a problem with this, but I actually use a human heat pad and have been doing so for over a year. It's a sunbeem and cost about $20.00, I just keep it on low and it works perfect. I'll be switching to heat tape soon though.

Me too, i've used a human heat pad ona rubber maid tub and under the tile they're currently on. Doesn't melt a thing, but you do have to check the temps often. IMO they're not that reliable, cuz i doubt they're supposed to be on 24/7.

You keep yours on low?

I guess its just colder where i am.
