Anything I can do to make my chameleon eat?

frogsandchams Apr 27, 2004 01:38 PM

My almost 4 year old Male Veiled Cham, Corona, is on his "hunger" strike again. What can I do to entice him to eat?
He has "quit" crickets when he was about one. Then he went on a Superworm kick, and occasionaly I have fed him wax worms, butter worms, silk worms, and Horn worms. Now none of these he seems interested. He looks healthy enough, walking all over his cage, turning black spots when he sees me, the normal stuff. Its been about 2-3 weeks now.

do you feed him one thing at a time or mix and match? Try some flies, maybe try some crickets again, or preying mantis, or roaches *shivers*

I just fed all my adult male chameleons each a small lizard, they really really enjoyed them. I highly reccomend lizards as a treat every couple of weeks. granted I felt so bad feeding the poor baby lizard to a cham, but if he's not eating and he eats this it will give him tons of nutrition that he'd been lacking, help him thought the hunger strike possibly.

A small lizard? As in.....??
I feed him different things different days, or mix them up. I've done both. And yes, I have put crickets in there too! I have to put it in a cup also, its an open cage, can't have any critters running out! I do sometimes put the silk or horn worms on the plants but I always end up finding them dead on the floor in the house!

Small lizard as in a little brown anole. I dont know where you are located so I cant say if they run wild around you but they are all over the place here in FL, I just catch them off my fence and throw them in the cage.

I have 2 chameleons that refuse to eat out of a bowl, maybe you can rig something up so the cage is not open anymore. Or get a really big feeding dish that might help, although one of my chams will only eat if the food is crawling up the screen, just some food for thought.
