is this your first herp? if it is i would say a leo because they dont require such demanding needs.

hehe it is a gecko forum...i would think that people support geckos here....as for me...i think a leo is a better "beginners" herp....but ive once had a beardie before..and i find them much more social and receptive to humans...they actually will climb on u voluntarily...and sit there...and if prepared correctly u could feed them mostly salads with insects as treats....but like the other guy said...beardies are very demanding in terms of husbandry needs and need MUCH MORE ROOM..which is basically why i had to sell mine...baby beardies have a much higher death rate than baby geckos too..they are hard to rear...but once they get over 8 inches...they are easy to care for...so in all in all...my verdict is:
the leopard gecko !!
I have 2 leos and want a Beardie but have no room for one right now.
But as for leos
-They are small, don't need large tanks, or expensive UV lighting
- cute and not "scary", so mothers, etc might not fear them
- they poop in one spot for their entire lives, making clean up easy
-eat only insects so no need to cut veggies
-they're absolutely beautiful, no one leo is the same as another.
Only cons i can think of
-they can drop their tails, so im always worried
-not exactly lap lizards, i have a friend who takes her beardie food shopping with her.
price wise, here in BC canada beardies hatchlings are most of the time, cheaper and seemingly more common than leos.
I had that dilemna a short while ago and i finaly get a leo
Here the beardie cost a lot more than a normal leo. Beardie need a lot bigger cage, a Uv light, more basking spot...a beardie might eat almost 30 crix a day ! (i know one that eat that much). I get a leo and i dont regret it a bit (altough i would like my leo to spend less time in hiding). I dont have space for a beardie right now but maybe someday

Well i am just commenting on the cricket part. 1. doesnt your friend feed them vegetables? and 2. There is this new kind of dust that is like 5 bux a bottle and it has enough protien in one that a 15 crickets would give them. and you just put it in their vegetable dish and your set.

Actually my beardie poops in the same spot every day and my mom is less frightened of it then a leo. They also don't technically need uvb as long as they are properly supplemented.(which leos also need)I think a beardie is more rewarding. It all depends on how much money you have how much space and who the animal is for.
It depends what you want in a pet. a leo is smaller, more fragil. But it is lower costing than a breaded dragon, and they come in diffrent colors and designs.
A Beardie is larger, heavier, pretty costy, and if your awake more of the day than you are at night then they are a good pet for you.
You would need a 40 gallon breeder ( 89 dollars ), screen lid ( 15 ), a basking bulb, UV light (or calcium dust) i dont know how much they cost. you'd need a log so it can have a basking spot. My friend made a website about all the animals he had/has. Sorry i forget it but when he gets on aim i will ask him and post a message under this thread.

Ok well, I did alot of research on both before I got my Leo...so heres the things.
Beardies = omnivores so you have to do alot of chopping of fresh veggies and also provide crickets and or mealworms to them
Leos= insectivores so you only have to provide crickets and or mealworms (w/ a good dusting of calicum ofcourse this goes for the beardies as well)
Beardies=a good sized enclosure for an adult as babies a 20 gallon will do...but these lizards get 24 in. or so long so at some point will mostly likely need a larger enclosure.
Leo= a smaller enclosure.. a juvie or baby do great in a 10 gallon for sometime...and even a single adult will be ok a 10 gallon as well...although some think they need a 20 gallon as adults but thats up to you.
Beardies= not quite as "delicate" as babies as leos so the young beardies are usually easier to handle as babies.
Leos= like beardies rarely bite...but you must be very careful as babies...and beardies can really handle longer periods of handling better.
Beardies=full spectrum light which means they will need a basking light w/ UVB
Leos=dont really require any lights and can do will w/ a UTH as long as temps are checked regularly to make sure they dont get to hot...I have my uth hooked to a dimmer to monitor temps and it works great....I also use a moonlight lamp for night veiwing (as this is when my leo is awake)...but this isnt a requirement for care.
hmmm this is about all i can think of right off the top of my head so anyone feel free to add stuff.
IMO I would say leos are a better first herp.....beardies get larger and require much more special attention to detail then leos.
