PEOPLE THAT USE TILE IN THEIR LEO'S CAGE PLEASE READ.

LeopardGeckoMan Apr 27, 2004 03:20 PM

Hi, I am thinking about making my adult female geckos cage sand and someone suggested before to use tile in it as well. So i was wondering how much it would cost to get the tiles and i
'd appreciate it if someone could take a picture of the tile and what their cage looks like with it in there. Also is the tile easy to cut?

I am going to use the sand that is ment for sand boxes. Is this stuff a problem, if so what should i get. I am not ever going to get calci sand because ive seen what it does to other animals and it is not worth the risk.

That is all for now and Thank You in advanced for everyone that replies.

as long as you sift the sand to get the larger rocks out of it, you will be fine with sand. In a display type cage, i dont think anything looks better

Ok, but why do people put tiles in their cages? I just wanted a picture to see why.

I use tile because I think it looks very nice, is very easy to clean, and holds heat nicely. I use vinyl tiles, which you can cut with scissors. The pic isn't how my tank looks now (I had sand at the end at one point, then decided it was a pain, then I had that construction paper, now I just have paper towels at the end and the rocks and hides are in different places....you can get the idea though. If you're using sand (and vinyl tiles) you might want to cut your tile in an irregular pattern at the edge just to make it look more natural. You could also just use pieces of slate instead of tile and then use sand between pieces.

Thank you very much.

One more thing though, can i have my tank just full of sand? I have an extra 10 gallon tank that i will use to feed my gecko so i am not worrying to much about impaction unless there is something wrong with having nothing but sand. Is there nething wrong with having nothing but sand?

I don't recommend using entirely sand...but a lot of people do it with no problems at all. Oh, and tile is less than $2 a tile... Any time you use sand you just have to keep a really close eye on the leo to make sure that you don't see it purposely eating the sand or licking it a lot. Also, try to keep an eye on its stool to make sure there's not sand in it.

i have been on sand, cypress mulch, and even sand covered with large pebbles back in my early leo days. i switched to tile a little over 6 months ago. i love it! the only slight change that i have made is this.......

i now have a small corner covered with a paper towel for the bathroom area. i can just change the paper towel daily.

4 tiles covered the bottom of my 4 foot long (55 gallon) tank, with no cutting needed. i have been told that places like home depot and lowes will cut the tile for you, if needed.

thanks for the compliments!

my mother-in-law is actually the artist on the site. i do the web design for her. the site is a little out of date due to our hectic lives.

that is a great idea about a background painting for the geckos!

I meant to say nice tank as well. One of your desert paintings would make an amazing backdrop for it.
