Just got my first cresties, but i have questions

bpmaster123 Apr 27, 2004 03:22 PM

Hi,
I just received my first cresties (an adult pair) that i will eventually breed. I have the cage set up with a medium sized plant and a few wrapping paper rolls for hides. I also put the food dishes on the bottom of the enclosure (is this ok, it is a large enclosure 3'x2'x2') And for the crickets, do i just throw them in or put them in a deli cup? And also the geckos seem kind of jumpy and frightened (especially the male) Will this go away after they get used to the new enclosure? The female readily laps baby food of my finger but the male runs or jumps away. Sorry for all the questions but i want to make sure they are ok!
Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing alot right. As far as do you feed from a deli cup or not. In my opinion it depends on whether you have papertowels on the bottom of the cage or some kind of substrate. If you have something like paper etc, then you can just feed the crickets loose (this is what I do). if you have substrate, I would feed from a deli cup or bowl to keep from taking in too much substrate when they eat.

As far as being a little Jumpy, that will settle down with some time and some gentle handling. Take it slow and easy, and I think that you will see how easygoing they can be. Sometimes I will pick them up with one hand, and let them lick my finger from the other hand....this seems to get them more used to taking food off of my finger. Good Luck.

Thank you for your suggestions. For now i am using the brick substrate cocoanut husk bedding and i just threw the crickets in there and noticed how sloppy they are when they feed so i will just feed crickets from some type of clear container. Once i start breeding and raising hatchlings i will probably use paper towels or something but for now im just using the natural vivarian type enclosure.
Thanks again for all your help!
