I've got to stop going into pet stores hehehe

RedQuake Apr 27, 2004 03:30 PM

so i went in after a very long work meeting to pick up some more crickets and superworms and there.........by the cash was a cage with 3 kittens.

Now i've been wanting another cat for years.....ours passed on at the age of 20 and i was i think 4 when we got her so....havign a cat was a part of my life. Well last year just before Christmas i decided i was going to buy a cat....period!!! Regardless of what my family thought i went out and bought all the supplies in hopes of finding a kitten (i wanted a kitten to raise although i did see many older cats i could have brought home as well). I saw an older deaf cat that i would have bought in a second but they wouldn't allow it to go anywhere that had dogs...... After months of looking i could not find any kittens anywhere......i was depressed.....

Today however i go in and theres 3 of them....abandoned just outside the petstore in a box.....how cruel is that!!!!!!??????!!!!!!!! Anyways i've fallen in love with the lone female and i've got her on hold for me hehehe. I didn't bring her home today cause i want to set everything up and MAKE SURE all of the lids on my gecko tanks are VERY secure hehehe.

Since the issue of cats and geckos has come recently could those of you with experience give me some tips so i'm better prepared?

The only tank i'm actually worried about is the 2nd 40 gal which is at floor level cause its on the bottom shelf of the stand that holds two of these tanks. The tops i made and are very secure but its the cat staring into the tank that concerns me.

Well any advice (other than me staying out of petstores LOL i'm already going to try that) would be wonderful hehe. I'm sooooooooooo excited....i'm looking forward to seeing how the cat and my dog do together....when she gets full size she won't be that much smaller than the dog hehehe

Thanks
Red

i have two cats. And my cage is like 2.5 ft above the ground on a desk. the cats dont bother them there. if you have a herp specific room you might wanna try closing it during the day.

Ya know, i was thinking of keeping this room off limits to the cat unless i'm here. I'm off the rest of the week so i can spend alot of time with her. I think i'll only allow her in here when i'm here so i can keep an eye on her. Also being so young (they estimate 5 weeks but i'm thinking a bit older) that i can train her to stay away from the geckos.

Being so tiny i don't plan on giving her the run of the house.....actually i've got a huge cage (was used for our large dog) that i might keep her in while i'm at work. I plan on having my bedroom be her focal point of the house. I usually spend most of my time in here with the geckos cause i also have my computer and TV in here. (((i learned that the bedroom isn't really the place for the TV and i agree as i'd stay up all night cuddled comfortably in bed with the TV on til all hours of the *morning*. Now i usually get to bed around 11 which is helping with my sleeping patterns and not feeling so tired))).

Thanks for the info

a good way to help you train cats/kittens is to use a spray bottle and when the cat/kitten does something bad you spray it with the bottle. Do you have cable in your room? because i never stay up watching TV due to that nothing is on on broadcast.

Ya i've got a few spray bottles around....the cat won't get away with much....but then again she's so tiny and loveable that i'm sure it'll be hard to discipline her hehehe.....

I have the cable in both rooms down here. I could put a TV in my bedroom but i really don't want to. I used to stay up all night and thats just not good for my health anymore (27 and feeling 60).

I aslo read that to maintain a peacefull and productive household you should keep things in their place. Meaning that the bedroom is for sleeping......lol, the computer room for the computer, the kitchen for eating etc. If i could actually stick to all of that i'd be 30 lbs lighter hehehehehe.... I'm all for having my environment support less stress for me and now that i've started doing it i'm actually feeling better. Currently my gecko/computer/tv room is very unorganized and when i come in here i feel more stressful in that i have to get things cleaned up but i never seem to have the energy...

I have so much planned for the gecko room and feel like theres just not enough time to get it all done. I want to be able to take pics and show them off but as it stands right now, its just not the way i want it setup.

Bringing a new pet home isn't really the best of ideas right now but it does give me much pleasure having a cat again. It just won't be able to be in here until i can get things set up so that it'll be completely safe.

Oh. If you feel it is to dangerous for the cat then dont put it in any risk. Our cats were never allowed in the computer room so they dont go in it, altough when one is sick/has furballs they usually get rid of their sickness in the computer room.

I'm more concerned about the safety of the geckos lol. All of the wires for the computer and other stuff are tucked away very well so i don't think thats a problem. I got down to look around from the cats point of view cause i wanted to get their perspective on the rooms it'll be in. By doing this i could see that there are afew places she could get into or behind where i couldn't get to. I've blocked off alot so i'm sure she'll be ok as long as i'm around

Hi,

Congrats on the kitten!

The beginning of this year I adopted a kitten (he was 6 months old) and he was a very curious thing when it came to the geckos and other lizards. in fact, he hopped onto the screen of my bearded dragon cage and broke it one night he didnt get inside, it just broke underneath him and scared the crap out of him and he jumped down (beardie is in a 50 breeder on a tank stand.) so definately make sure that your screens can at least support the weight of a cat, just in case he does try and hop onto it one day when you are not home. instead of buying a new screen lid made for it i bought chicken wire that was real thick and cut it and bent it and made a real sturdy cage top, just for future references. after a while and after much yelling of him to stop jumping on top of cages (he has jumped on top of them all at least once) he has since stopped. not saying your new kitty will, but just warnin ya Have fun with your new critter!

Yea! Kitty for Red!! My experience with cats and geckos has been fine. The gecksos are all in my room so even when I babysat my boyfriends cat (Nova) who wasn't allowed to leave me room, I had no incidents. Now when I would open up my racks, Nova tried to climb in. I actually have pictures of him in one of the empty rack shelves. But overall, my cats care more about the crickets then the lizards. The geckos don't generally feel a need ro run as fast as crickets hop, so my cats watch the crickets not the geckos! That isn't say that given the chance they wouldn't try to munch. I've caught one of my cats lying on the table next to the tanks, but again she doesn't seem to care. But don't forget, kitten care A LOT more than adult cats do. LoL, just use common sense and you're a smart girl you'll figure it out!

Hi, thanks for replying I'm so happy to have a kitten coming home. As i said to the above poster, the cat will only be in the gecko room while i'm here so i can keep at eye out for any trouble. What i'll have to do is put a stronger top on the tank i make the tops for. I used a fairly thin screen which wouldn't
hold the weight of a cat. Or i could put on cross bars so that even if she does manage to dislodge the screen she still can't get at the geckos....we'll see but your input is very much appreciated. I've got out the stuff just going to set it up after dinner and then go into my bedroom and the gecko room get down on all fours and check it out as she will be. I want to check for any place she could get into thats not appropriate and block it off.

Thanks again

All of my animals (except my new leos) have been impulse buys. Good luck with your new kitten. There is a stray kitten that keeps coming to our house for food. She is adorable, but I think my dogs might kill her if we tried to keep her. Not to mention my landlord has a very strong allergy to cats and will not allow us to have one. I got my first cat the same way, meowing at my doorstep. I think the old lady next door is going to keep her, otherwise I would be trying to find her a home.

Ya it was an impluse buy but i did have everything i would need for a cat bought a long time ago. Its only because i haven't found any kittens for sale that i haven't bought one yet. What i like about this pet store is that they don't charge alot of money and what they do ask for goes straight to the local humaine society to help out the animals there. Makes me feel good that my money is going towards a good cause.

I'm happy and excited about going to pick her up tomorrow morning. I've made sure all of my tanks are extra secure and i'll be keeping a close eye on the kitten while she's in here

I think i'm ready

Wow, thats awesome. All the pet stores out here are big buisness, money hungry... One day I would love to open an amazing animal shelter/pet store, it's been my dream (and many others I know) since I was very little. I think I would have to win the lottery first, LOL.
