Hello all. So I'm making my brief yearly rodent endeavor. I feed all my adults frozen thawed, but during hatching season, I like to have a fresh supply of live crawler size mice available. Anyway, in my pet store I was talking to the guy about bedding. They use, and he reccommended the "Cell-Sorb" recycled paper stuff. He claimed it was super at reducing oders, etc. But when I got the stuff home and dumped it out in the cage, I was suprised to find that the bedding itself stinks quite a bit,kind of a old rotten newspaper smell. My question is this, does this stuff normally smell this bad? Did I get a bad batch or what? Will the smell go down after it airs out? Just wanted some input. I haven't even bought the mice yet, so I know it doesn't have anything to do with mice. Thanks for any input....

Yes, that is normal Cellsorb smell. Some don't like it and some don't like the alfalfa smell of rabbit pellets. It does air out some and then IT IS super absorbent. Do as they recommend and only use a 1/2 inch or so. I use it or rabbit pellets for rats and a handful in each corner of the mice tubs. They also recommend stirring the corners daily....I never do, but if you use it deep and don't stir you can get serious ammonia suddenly and or wet corners. Though I have not had molding issues with it (like you will with rabbit pellets.) Just using the fistfuls in the corners and shavings otherwise I can get 10 days out of a 8 or 9 mouse tub (like 13X18) with hoppers you cut the days between changes.
