Brent... pine is not a good idea because of the oils in the wood. Aspen is fine. I use a mixture of coconut fiber (Eco-Earth or Bed-a-Beast), orchid bark chips, and vermiculite and have never had a problem... good for burrowing and hold moisture well. That being said, I never feed in the cages they live in, so substrate ingestion is not an issue for me. Good luck!
Use reptibark....works perfect for my collection. Pine shaving could be harmful to your kingsnakes.
I have been using Pine shavings for a large collection over three decades with no problems.
Pine has not harmed my collection of 75 snakes or so. Just make sure to stay away from Cedar. Aspen is great too or Carefresh.
Newspaper has done well too.
