starmom Jun 15, 2003 02:31 PM

my daughters and I were out to get a new hamster cage for her little golden (cutie) and we of course have to look,(ive never bought animals there this is my first)

anyway we noted that the encloures were looking really nice, and set up properly, and there were a bunch of baby beardies and this one was on the top of the pile at the basking site and has the most beautiful orange markings all the way down to the tail

I paid less than half what I paid for delilah and this babys got some beautiful color! now we are on herp #l0, my hubby took it in stride! (we have him well trained now) LOL

Anyway enjoy the photo of my newest dragon as of yet unnamed..

Beardies like a low humidity level, and can be sensitive to the bacteria that grow in standing water. Instead of a water dish in the cage, I recommend a daily bath/misting OUTSIDE of the cage. I use a rubbermaid container with hand temp water to about chest deep, and give them a couple of squirts from a spray bottle to get them started. ALL of my BD's seem to relish bath time. It doesn't take them long to get the hang of it either.

Sandfire sends the "plain" beardies to Petco so you can actually end up with a baby with alot of color. I have a boy from petco that actually is actually very colorful. Their loss is our gain. =)

The petco here in NY (the part I live in) gets theirs from Fluker Farms along with Petsmart. Both stores admitted they buy their stock from Flukers (or did at the time we asked several several months ago). Its amazing what you can find out when you bring up the humane societies name etc.LOL Where abouts do you live? Just curious! LindsayMarie

I work at Petsmart here in PA. We get most of our dragons from Sandfire. I was lucky enough to get Gordo on 30% off employee day. Awesome bits of orange and a great pattern for under $50. Although he's definitely priceless!
Starmom, what a beauty!

The one I just got from my shop looks the EXACT same, markings wise... is this a different colour than a "regular" dragon? Did I get a good one?

Wow, I didn't know there was good Petcos! The one here is so terrible, I've left there crying. I'd do anything to see it shut down! I also got a beardie there (actually two...the other died shortly after, it was very weak). His name is Sakari,he looked just like your's, even had a little red on his head. Later it turned orangish, now he has completely lost all his color Oh well. Maybe your's will be different, and of course I don't love him any less He has a neurological problem that probably came from the bad supplier they have, or the bad conditions the babies at the store live in (fake sand substrate, huge crickets in their cage, no basking). He can't use his legs very well and he has no balance. You can see him on my site (below). You are lucky to have a nice Petco, you wouldn't believe the things I've seen in our's. I've tried everything I can think of to get them in trouble, but nothing worked

PetCo thinks they know it all about pet care because they read it somewhere. I am a breeder and I also took on an extra evening job as a reptile specialist at a PetCo to see if I could change things.
Come to find out, My knowledge means nothing if the store won't bend. We are stuck with a wall unit that supplies uvb, but has no room for a heat bulb, and are forced to used heat rocks. There are not even plug ins in every cage for a heat rock. Most of the heat rocks we cover over with substrate to keep them from getting too hot. We do have adjustable heater (to some minor degree), for the tanks but they heat up the whole enclosure rather than just one side.
Since I have begun working, the animals are much fatter and healthier, but when I've tried to move them off the wall unit onto the floof for a proper set up, I have gotten written up (close to being fired). So, with my arms tied, I am doing the best I can to inform buyers of all they need to know about set up and telling them to disregard how we have set our animals up.
The down side is that I am not there through the whole day - you can't know how many times I've had customers tell me that other employees (even past retile specialists) have told them to do something stupid with their set up. (sigh)
I do what I can to improve my little niche in the world, but even so my hands are still tied by corporate mandate on many issues.
You may complain to the corporate office, but be sure to put the location of the store down. That store will receive a copy of your email. But, unless enough people stand up and say they want change, corporate will not want to spend money to change things. Right now, there are not near enough people involving themselves. Perhaps a boycott petition if certain reptile rights demands are not met? i.e.: Like all reptiles that need a basking light be supplied with one as well as uvb. Meal worms stop being used as standard diet of leo gecko babies (this is a required staple 24 hours a day, although I have not fed them due to the impactions on mealies, etc..
Perhaps this is overboard, but something big needs to happen or things will not change - I know, because I work there.
Here's to hope and a swift kick to corporate arse.
