differences between northern ribbon and eastern ribbon snake

I was just curious as the difference between the northern and eastern ribbon is it color? or a scale count? something else please help me thanks for your help

According to Conant and Collins, the Northern Ribbon is similar but smaller and darker. Dark portion is velvety black or dark brown; yellow mid-dorsal stripe is often partly obscured by brown pigment; tail usually is less than 1/3 of the total length. I can find no reference to any differences in scale counts; lateral stripes on both subspecies are on scale rows 3 and 4. Hope this helps.
