Canned foods

Sohni Apr 27, 2004 06:17 PM

Will boxies really eat those "Can O'" foods? I have live mealies, but it's hard to keep them from escaping the food dish, and I'm not sure if Baxter could find them in his pen (or if he'll even eat them, for that matter). Is the nutritional content the same as live?

What about mice? I keep frozen fuzzies for some of my snakes, will they eat those (cut up), or does their "live" food have to be wiggling?

It doesn't seem to be as important to have moving food for adults...unless you have an adult thats really reluctant to eat, in which case the movement can stimulate appetite.
Just try and keep protein levels at about 50% over all. Insects, worms, snails, slugs, chicken, lean canned dog food ( senior formula is lower in fat)....lots of choices, and if you vary the foods offered, they stay interested. Providing variety is a good way for you to cover your bases in terms of providing a variety of nutrients, too.

Mine have eaten the can o worms and the can o crickets. I am not sure of the nutrional content, but they look good to me. I sprinkle it on their greens and fruit mixture, and they love it. I do feed live bugs too. I like superworms for them. I pick one up with bug tweezers, hold it in front of them, and they eat it. That way I also know that each of them is getting their fair share. Once I fed a live pinkie, and they devoured it in like 30 seconds. It was too much for me to watch and listen to, it actually screamed when they started to eat it. I am sure they would eat thawed ones too.

Good Luck.

I feed the can-o-worms and my boxie loves them. I'm going to be pciking up the can-o-crickets next to see if he'll eat those too. I like them as I"m not alloweed to keep live bugs and i dont' think i would really want to. This way i jsut have to go and take out as many as i need at a time.

I foudn that i can't use a can fast enough(only 1 turtle to feed) so i freeze the rest and them i can take out a few at a time.
