Agro Albino Cali King

apfjavi Jun 15, 2003 02:40 PM

So I got an Albino Cal King yesturday and it was given to me as a male. He's beautiful but darn it if he doesn't have the WORST temperment. Are Cal Kings usually this aggressive? He tries to strike, postures, rattles, and I'm just standing by the tank. It is rather entertaining but I would eventually like to handle him. He's only 2 years old. My Knob is such an angel compared to this little demon. What can I do?
Oh and tomorrow I might be given another cal king but if they're all this aggressive I would rather pass.
thanks!

i believe its generally recommended to give new snakes a few days to get used to their new home before playing with or feeding them

I have some that are dog tame, but they just need handling.when you have your tank open and if he tries to crawl out put your hand under his head and let him crawl onto your had without grasping him, unless he tries to flee.do that until he gets more relaxed with you and knows your not a threat,There not all agressive.good luck

I actually have not tried to handle him. I know I'm not supposed to but thanks for the advice. I'm just afraid that I won't be able to because he's so aggressive just being in his tank. I'll give him some time and see if he calms down any.
I think I'll give the other cal king a chance as well...
thanks!

a tip i've posted elsewhere: buy a pair of gardening gloves and wear them in the beginning. then YOU are not afraid, and i think that's communicated to the snake, as it is with most animals. Plus you'll learn what's bluff and what's not. And if it perceives you're not deterred by its posturing, it may drop the pose. All in all, it's a good way to get started with an animal like this. Before you know it, you might r3ealize, hey, i don't need these gloves any more...!

I never have liked the gloves idea. For the snakes sake, it would be alot better biting skin than a fabric. The teeth may get caught in the gloves and break. I do agree about the fear thing but after the first bite you shouldn't be afraid. Besides the thing probably isn't going to bite anyway. In my experience biting is a last resort and usually only tried once.
