Eggs finaly!

jovcham Apr 27, 2004 08:01 PM

My poor girl started digging her final hole at 11 this morning, at 7:45 tonight she started covering up the hole. She was in this hole all day.

I started digging them out following the soft area of dirt, it went 18 inches down to the bottom of the bucket then around the bottom about 5 inches, I've never done so much digging myself in my life. In the end I now have 21 bright shinny eggs and a very tired little girl.

one question though, isnt she supose to weight less than before she was bred? she weighs 8 grams more, does this mean she could have more eggs still?

Congrats on the eggs! That's really odd that she weighs more than before.... 21 eggs typically weighs something like 10 or 12 grams, give or take, so her gaining weight is even more unlikely.... And 8 grams is alot of weight.... You sure it's not your scale? She should be at least 10-15 grams lighter than before, which means she's about 18 grams or more in the wrong direction. Maybe she's swollen or something, but I don't know where all that fluid could have come from.... Good luck, but I'm confused.

Well she had gained 28 grams after breeding, then after she laid she had lost 20 grams. thats still 8 grams more than before the breeding. A friend sugested it might be all the dirt all over her, I dont think it could make 8 grams... I'm at a loss, I'll keep the small dirt bucket in her cage just incase.

Thanks for the response Tyler. time will tell I guess.

I don't want to worry you, but if your girl did retain some eggs, leaving a nest box in for her won't help. She thinks she's done & won't lay them. I usually visually inspect my females after they lay. Any retained eggs can be seen easily if you know what to look for. I can tell best if the female is stretched out climbing. I wouldn't worry too much about the weight difference right now. Keep her fed & watered. And check her often for any signs of distress. If you are truly worried, take her to a vet . X-rays will show if any eggs were retained.
Hope this helps,
Cricket

Thanks.

Oh and she laid 2 more eggs today on top of the soil. It was getting dark when she stopped and burried her eggs yesterday so I guess the night stopped her. I'm really glad she's doing good.
