Here the thing i'm getting ready to setup a leo tank and i have a question i dont really wanna spend $8 on a bag of sand(i like natural setups no paper towls for me) i live very close to the beach and i was wondering if i could grab some sand from there like farthest from the water itself

unless you have an easy way to disinfect sand, even then there are so many negative side effects with it.

you never know what could be in that sand, urine, poison, pesticides... any small amount of something like that could kill you're leo.
Honestly, for a natural "safe" set up, go buy some tiles from home depot for a few bucks. Make sure to measure your tank first so they can cut them to size. I love the look of sand as well but I love the look of healthy leos more. I just don't want to take any chances.

parisites, impaction mite really happn quickly, try tiles from home dopot or such. there only bout $1 or so each

Lint, there's nothing wrong with using sand. I will agree though, don't use the beach sand. Sterilizing beach sand would be much more labor intensive than going to Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc and getting a 50 pound bag of play sand for 1.50-3 bucks. I am the same about the naturalistic caging. I'd consider myself experienced in using sand as a substrate. I've been doing so before keeping leos (started in 1996) and my current job as the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History Nature Center Intern has me maintaining the museum's herp collection, which involves them living on sand. The museum has used sand as a substrate way before I started working there and they've never had any fatalities either. The people on this forum are paranoid about and inexperienced in the use of sand as a caging substrate, so I'd pretty much ignore them. They are extremely biased about it and you won't get the info you're looking for. Feel free to e-mail me. I'll get pics of my one and only current leo cage with sand substrate and tell you how I set mine up. I'm not going to say more as I'm tired of continually typing on this subject matter.

Not all of us are anti-sand......in fact Nevin (grimreaper) and I were the two people mocked on fauna classifieds the other day for saying that sand wasn't so bad........

-ignorance is not to be punished when one is trying to gain knowledge...what scares me is the vast number of people who, when given the information to gain knowledge, choose to ignore it.
I myself used sand for four years before switching to slate. However, there have been many problems linked to using sand as a substrate. No, I don’t have proof of this myself, I just trust in other who do.

For you to call everyone inexperienced because they care enough about their animals to not want to take a chance is extremely inconsiderate. Also what is there to be experienced about in the use of sand? it's not very difficult. Maybe we are being paranoid but I would rather be safe than sorry.

When people like lint come here not knowing about them I don’t think it is a bad thing for people to want to inform them. I want the best for all of my animals and hopefully so does everyone else.
Post pictures of your set up here. I am not biased against sand, just choose not to use it. I love coming here and getting neat ideas from other peoples set ups. Please don't take this bad, I just don't like being called paranoid, biased, and inexperienced because I have chosen to be cautious.
