Missing a cricket and eating sand is what caused the impaction in my gecko and ever since then, i've kept my gecko's on newspaper/paper towels.

If it is a newly aquired animal, or is young, then its defensive behavior is normal. As the leo ages or becomes settled in it will calm down quite considerably. A mouthful of sand can be potentially dangerous. Not only does it irritate the leos delicate mouth, the sand could cause an impaction. If you are against getting rid of the sand for a safer substrate, feed the leo from a dish from now on to prevent the accidental ingestion of sand.

I was told the stuff I have for him {just went to talk to someone} is safe for geckos. It is't sand it's umm Coconut Husk. A damp soil type material. I was told not to use sand for him because he can eat it and it's harmfull. I do feed him in a dish for mealies but crickets well they have a mind of their own!

Ingesting any small particled bedding isn't good. To keep the crickets in a dish pinch off the jumping legs and make sure the dish has walls high enough to keep the crickets in.
