Aspen works well, I find that the Aspen Chips are almost 100% dust free.

a hide...because a while back i read a post and i think it was jeff that used hide made of wood....and so i use pine to make it...the bps loved it but its pine....so i pulled out the hides today....so im just wondering if it matters if the pine is substrate or a hide???any info would be great....

If it's toxic or causes RI then I don't see why it matter if it's something under them or touching their sides. It's dangerous to be around them.
