Want a midsize tortoise need suggestions!!!!!

terrygar Apr 28, 2004 09:28 AM

Hello I have a Hermanns and he is great, healthy and happy at 8 mo old.
I do not want to mix species, but I have plenty of room, indoors and outdoors for another tort and they will never meet.
I live in the SF bay area but in 2 years will move to Florida.
I would like to find a midsize tort that would get 12"-14" and weight under 40lbs. Friendly type that could handle Florida temps.
IDEAS PLEASE
Terry

A redfoot, maybe?

Redfoot is beautiful, but I like the desert bulky types.

Why don't you wait until you move to Florida and then adopt a gopher tortoise (if that's feasible, I'm not sure about the laws)? Otherwise, I'd suggest adopting a CA desert tort, but I don't think the humidity in Florida would be best for one.

Redfoots are wonderful! They seem to do very well in Florida too.
They have great personalities and, especially if you raise one from hatchling, will simply love you and show it!
If you have room for more than one I would suggest two or more. I started with one, but then got three hatchlings, and with having that little group, observing them became even more interesting, because they interact quite a bit.
Good luck with choosing,
Gaby

I know you may like the bulkier types but I think a redfoot really should get your consideration. They grow on you real fast. They are very personable, the right size for what you want and Florida would a great place for one. I kinda thought they looked strange too and like the bulkier desert types but I foster one from a rescue and fell in love with it. Now I have too and a yellowfoot as well.
