empty tank smells like trash

stunt101 Apr 28, 2004 10:58 AM

I was holding two small red eared sliders for a friend for 2 days. after he took them back I took out the filter to help filter the algae out of one of my other fish tanks and let the turtle water sit in the tank. well last night I rinsed the tank and decor out due to to the smell and now it is back where it was dry and empty with a new basking area. I have a fan airing out the smell but it still reeks. I need to fill it again soon because I am getting a turtle this saturday. I need to know what will nuke the smell of the tank and be safe for me to fill the tank a day or two later.
thank you

Rinsing it out won't get rid of that odor. Take a ten percent bleach solution and clean and soak all the rocks and things in that. Don't soak plastic tubes in it as the clear plastic may cloud (which is not horrible it just won't be clear anymore.) Then be sure to rinse it all thoroghly with water and allow it to dry in the sun. This will dissipate any of the bleach.
