Did she get knocked up?

conodor Apr 28, 2004 11:45 AM

i got 2 beardies the same day. (2 totally diffrent ones one hypo and one normal so not related at all) and they have really grown attached to each other. i got them mid October. they were about 7inches at the time. so i figure they have to be about 8- 10 months old.

i'm pretty sure one is a male and one is a female. i'm still having difficulty telling for sure. well the one that i though was a female is growing fatter faster than the other. they have each went through growth spirts and are pretty even in length. but she seems to be getting a pretty large belly lately.

i've read all i can about breeding and really didn't plan on it happening this early... so i don't know for sure if they can even breed yet. or if she's old enough to lay eggs even.

so i guess i have 2 questions. 1.) what age can females start to lay eggs?

2.) how long do the eggs sty in her body?

0k a 3rd) is there a way to tell other than going to the vet?

thanks, and if someone can point me in a direction for alittle more reading on the steps of breeding and post breeding(hatching). i've read alot but maybe i missed a good site out there.

Thanks!

I am curious as to where you have gotten the info you have so far. Only because at 8-10 months old 7" is waaaaaaaaaay below where it should be. Who/what was providing the information you have gotten so far?

i must have either said it wrong or you misunderstood.

they WERE 7 or 8 inches when i got them... 6 months ago.

i haven't measured them lately. they are probably 15inches or so. extremely healthy and happy. i figure now they are about 8 10 months or so. since i've had them for 7 months.

i don't understand your reply title either? are you criticizing me for posting info to others and i need to be better informed in order to do this?

No, not at all.

If I hadn't mistunderstood you I was criticising the source where you were getting your info.

You had indicated you had read a lot then you said you figured your beardie was about 7-8 mos since it was 7" long(I thought). I thought you had come to that conclusion because of what you had read.

My "Off Topic" subject title was because my post didn't answer any of your questions and only addressed something I thought I had noticed.

FYI, I didn't answer your actual question because I didn't know the answer .

Hi
on my website i havbe lots of links with caresheets and other info.
beardies can get eggs very fast and some time even when they r 6 months old.
they stay in tummy for round the 3 weeks and then they wil lay the eggs.
then it take 2 month incubation time when they hatch.
so if you have space then i would advice to splitt them up til the female is round the 1 1/2 years old.
then she wil not grow any more and then its save to have eggs!!

checking your website out now, thanks(some very nice dragons on there btw)

right now i'm cramped for space. i'm in the middle of building 2 65 gallon tanks(a top and bottom set up.) and i'll then have to deal with the little guy i have. but until this is done keeping them together is really my only option.

i'm building it with the fake walls and caves putting to much detail into it but when it's done it'll be well worth it.

my latest idea is a built in mister. ever go to the store and see in the veggie department how it mists the veggies automatically ever couple hours? well i'm doing some studies on using something like this or not.haha if i do it right it'll be like alittle rain fall at a set time. but i don't know if it's worth the time put into making it work perfectly.

but your info about 3 weeks and 2 months, that's exactly what i was looking for. i seen before 2 months. but i never really noticed or remembered the 3 weeks in the body.

thanks for the info!

Hi
i would not make a buld in misting system it could be ge to humid then'.
you can beter mist them once a day r bath them ponce a week.
i have a swalow bowl in the cages that to make it little bit humid.
i try to have my humitity level between the 30-60 %
if you buy a tempreader with a extra probe indoor outdoor type then many have also a humitidy meter included in it same time.

yeah that's what i was afraid of. even at misting them just a once or twice a day for maybe a minute or 2. i don't know how badly it'll affect the humitiy. so i might just not do it.

i want to get another lizard. that can handle higher humidiy. maybe a water dragon. and put that in his cage. but first thing's first finishing up this beardie cage.haha
