The smaller of my two female brevi's shed a few weeks ago and had one piece of shed on her leg that was hanging on. I knew it had remained, but thought it was just partial and saw no problems arise, watching closely for discoloration. Then in the past two days I have noticed her falling (!) when she really shouldn't have been, so I watched her and saw that her one foot was not clasping properly. I took her out and looked with a hand-lens (her foot is about the size of this: i) and it looks as though the remaining skin is encircling her ankle and may be cutting of circulation to her foot
Her foot looks brownish but only the color of the shed. I can see her foot and little claws OK. I soaked it in warm water - she was very good about it! - hoping I could soften it enough to help remove it. I have done "surgery" on butterfly antennae, a 1" long caterpillar having a bad molt and help rescue dragonflies from spider webs so I am pretty good with tiny, but the logistics just don't seem too possible here. I am wondering if this may be more of a problem in her next molt or if it may come off. If a Tarantula loses a leg during a molt they usually grow one back with the next molt, cool, huh?
Anyway, she is eating fine and moving around. maybe I should just soak it a few times daily until her next molt just to keep it moist? Could I use a safe oil (almond, safflower) to keep it moist? Anyone have similar experience? Thanks for any help!!!
