bmwexotics Apr 28, 2004 01:10 PM

I have a friend who is out west and he has called me with a report. No Graybands yet. He is finding C. lepidus and C. molossus he is also finding a few others during the day (whipsnakes/coachwhips) We will report the entire trip when he comes back on Sunday. He said last night cooled of real fast but the nights before it was 70 at midnight. It looks like it will be to cooled tonight but will start warming up again by Thu after noon. I can't wait for the new moon in May!

May be a bit early for alterna... It is possible but unlikely... The first one is usually early may. They start really moving in between middle May and Early June. But, if you are down, might as well look. I do recall a year when several were taken in April, but I don't think they were from Juno Rd.

Hope you guys do well.

Steve

The tire testers "slowed" this one down for me on June 28, 2000. I found it DOR at 9:00 pm. That makes 3 alterna for me so far, 2 of which I found before 9:00 pm.
I also found a DOR bairdi and subocularis on the same night.

Sorry for the lousy pic, I was borrowing someone else's point and shoot digicam.

If you want to see a live Juno that I got in 93 then take a look at Ron Markel's book "CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF KINGSNAKES" that was released in 1995 (I think). Page 7 at the bottom contains the Juno rd that John Leach and I caught on June 9th 1993 at almost straight up midnight south of the S-curve. It had a fuzzy mouse in its mouth when we caught it, and then bit
the hell out of us. It was worth it, it was one of those ultra cool orange in fused with the grey (to make it look lighter) and had two straight lines for the nuchal. The picture in the book is a so-so picture for Ron, so it doesn't do the snake Justice. If memory serves, the night was a full moon. The Barametric Pressure was good though. I have seen a couple of dors after this one. One real nice one was north of bakers that was a sandy color light grey. It was small but stunning. No digital cameras at that time though.
Take Care,

Steve

That should be April 28th, thus the point of the post.

Alterna typically start moving in April,
and usually by mid April, especially in
Val Verde county.

This year is a little cooler than most, however
I would not be surprised at all if the boys from
Alpine already found one or two this year (in April
in between the fronts).

There are a lot more folks looking nowadays than in
years past, and a ton of stuff found that we never hear
about. For this reason I wouldn't discount one or two
coming out of Val Verde already this year (a little
birdie told me).

Best
Joe

I have heard of folks catching a stray male in April. I know pat took one many years ago in Langtry I think in mid to late april. I think most would agree you have better chances in May.

I tell you what though, If it was a warmer year, I might hit it in may before the masses come out to collect. Nothing like having roads to yourself. If you have land, then you are lucky.

I look forward to the day of owning land down south.

Take Care,

BMWEXOTICS...I don't live in San Antonio. If I knew who this was, I would be more apt to give details...

Hope you have good luck,
