Very sick frog, could anybody give me some advice?

pyrowoman Apr 28, 2004 01:38 PM

I know everyone here is probably so tired of reading posts called "Help, sick frog!!", but i really do need some advice. I had 3 White's treefrogs for quite awhile now, but i lost one over the winter. My two males were doing very well up until about 2 days ago, when i noticed some little red marks on one of the frogs back legs. Well today, when i was cleaning, i checked on them, and the one with the red spots has now lost all the skin on his leg, and the bones are exposed. I have never seen this or heard of anything like this happening. First, i know that there is probably nothing i can do to save this frog, but i'm worried that it will spread to the other one, even though i took him out when all of this started. Second, if anyone has ever seen this before, what is it?? And is it contagious to humans? Thank you for any info anyone could give me!!!

The first thing to do is to separate them into separate tanks, you absolutely have to assume it is contagious. Take them both to a veterinarian as soon as possible (ie, tomorrow morning!) so that the condition can be assessed and the very sick from can be euthanized if necessary. Also, the majority of illnesses in captive amphibians and reptiles are due to improper husbandry, it would be essential for you to evaluate your set up.
