Hey all,

I was curious at the pros and cons of the various varieties of Blue Tongued skinks (comments?). Which one would you recomend for a frist time skink owner?

i would definetely recommend a Northern Blue Tongue for several reasons: 1) best temperament out of all types 2) GUARANTEED CAPTIVE BRED NOT WILD CAUGHT 3) they grow big so if you want to breed them they have a good amount of babies 4) very hardy and easy to breed...they are the all around best blue tongue in my opinion. if you don't get a northern, for a first timer i would get a captive bred irian jaya, but the trick is that you have to know the breeder, because some irian jayas are captive bred while some are still imported like the indonesians, oh yeah, stay away from the indonesians, they are for the most part all wild caught. as a rule of thumb, don't buy from a pet store or importer, buy from a private breeder, and also, if they don't say what type of blue tongue it is, it is most likely an indonesian, possibly irian jayan. i have two northerns, and i love them both, they are the greatest. here is a pic of my super hypo northern female Lissa. i forgot...also, get what you like. i suggest going to www.bluetongueskinks.net, looking at the different types in the drop down menu, and see which type you think look the best as well...it is important for you to get an animal that you love in terms of both appearance as well as personality. i personally think that northerns and alpine blotches are the prettiest blue tongues, and so i got northerns...i'll probably get a pair alpine blotches in a couple of years. here is a pic of my caramel phase male northern Hefner.

That is one of the best looking BTS that Ive ever seen ...Im still waiting to see a leucistic BTS. Ive been out of the trade for a few years. Are leucistics showing up yet?

gramage, thanks for the nice comment. i posted another pic of him in my newer reply to smoke. as far as leucistics go...there aren't any true leucistics as of yet, but i have a female northern blue tongued skink who is extremely hypomelanistic, or "snowman phase." here is a pic of her when she used to belong to james wilson. hope you like. by the way, there are tons of great bts pics over at www.bluetongueskinks.net...even some albino pics.
