enclosure size question

rttlrvenom Apr 28, 2004 05:30 PM

ok well im looking at getting a male and two female and eventually breeding them. now heres my question.

What is a good size enclosure to put them in im looking for something like a fish tank. Now i realize i cant have the male in there all the time so would a 10 gallon work for him and a 30 or 40 work for the two ladies. im think of putting the male in the 10 except during the breeding season and keeping the females in the 30 - 40 the entire time.

these are the color morph or what ever there called in the leo world (im a corn guy)

1.0 jungle
0.1 patternless
0.1 undecided mabe someone can help me choose

thanxs in advance for all help.

yes, thats deff fine. i keep my male with my females, all year long. as long as the females arent intimidated theyll b fine. but if your ganna keep them sepperated. a 30-40 is more then enough for the 2 girls. so if ur ganna give them that, there ganna b some happy lil girls. and 10 will b fine for the male.

If you just stick your male in that cage ever so often, he wont eat right... He may feel intemidated by the huge cage, my male and female didnt do to well. My male did ok my female stoped eating. That is why i feed her and him in a 10 gallon and right back in the 60 gallon they go....

Just and idea ~!

That sounds fine to me Even a 20 gallon would be fine for the 3 of them...although I'm sure they'd appreciate the 30-40 gallon. Just make sure to get a long tank and not a tall... Also, make sure the ten gallon for the male has LOTS of space for him to climb and hide...here's an example of what I mean...this is my juvie male Spitfire's 10 gallon...

Good luck!...

p.s. as far as what the 3rd leo should be...I think you should get an albino! If you haven't already gotten the other two, you should consider getting a male albino...and the the females patternless and jungle... That way you would get babies double het for patternless albinos and double het for jungle albinos (assuming the jungle line is recessive and not linebred). Then crossing the hets (from the same parents) together you'd get some of everything...patternless albinos, albinos, patternless, jungle albinos, albinos, jungles, and normals!

to keep the male in with the females year around. the onlyt reason i was keeping them apart was because i didnt want the little girls to be having babies all the time, and i certinaly didnt want them to have babies to young and have a premature death because of it.

ok so a 20 gallon long would be ok for the three of them.

i keep mine in all year round, as i said befor. they will be fine, as long as the females are old enough to breed. 20gl long will be enough for all 3. just make sure none are being intimidated by the others.

I hate to see leos in a small cage the bigger the tank the more i like, you see so much more of your leos. I had a ten hardly ever saw my male. Went to a 3 ft long tank , I always see him and her out now

just my ideas....

If you are getting juveniles or hatchlings you WILL have to separate males and females...they will breed to young! Other than that you would have to be careful keeping the male with the females all year, because some males are very aggressive breeders and will not leave the females alone...which can seriously stress them out. I would get the 10 gallon anyway...they're inexpensive...and even if you don't use it for the male, you'll have someplace to put one if one of them gets sick. As far as the 20 gallon, yes it would work for 3...just make sure there are a lot of hiding places (so they aren't always hiding on top of each other because they have to), and lots of climbing space.
