Ant ID again (Red) and diet question.

cable_hogue Jun 15, 2003 04:29 PM

Here are a few photo's of some ant's I found near Acton CA. Are these harvesters of some type?

My next question. This info is from the uts.cc.utexas.edu site. (thanks Blackkat). If I understand this right ants are 90.3 % by item and only 44.7% by volume of total food? Right?

Diet: 90.3% Prey items are ants (occupying 44.7% stomach volume)
Happy Fathers day!
Cheers!

those are either Pogonomyrmex californicus or P. subnitidus, both harvestor ants are quite common in that area

Thank you.

Are you familiar with the HL's in that area? I saw two today out hiking. They were both together in a creak bed area.
I believe they are coronatum but not positive.

:Cable, those are Coast HLs in that area. The Ants appear to be Pogonomyrmex californicus. Lester G. Milroy III

Thanks Lester.
I used to work in this area when I was a teenager and remember seeing them there. I went back today to see if they were still there and sure enough they are. They are distinctly more "white" in color than the other group I have been observing with are much more brown and red. Makes sense I guess. One group is on a fire break ridge with redish and brown dirt and the other is in a creek bed with white sand.
Thanks again
Cheers.
