"outer banks" kingsnake

rdbartlett Jun 15, 2003 04:37 PM

on North Carolina's eastern coast, and especially the barrier islands, one may find kingsnakes (such as this) with heavy wite fleckings. these are often refered to as outer banks kingsnakes to which the scientifc name of Lampropeltus getula sticticeps is affixed.

Do you know if the outerbanks king ranges into the sandbridge area near virginia beach. I'm going there again this summer and last summer I rode a bike down into the barrier islands of North Carolina. Sandbridge is the farthest northern tip of those barrier islands.

apparently not-- at least not regularly. although occasional examples having this pattern are found in many areas of the range, they seem to concentrated in nc NC near Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

I have seen kingsnakes with very similar speckling as far south as Swansboro, NC. Most of the ones I have seen from that area are typically eastern color form, but, occasionly odd ones turn up in eastern NC. That's one reason I even question the validity of the subspecies.

i think you're correct in questioning its validity.
i do not feel it to be a valid race either.

I love them but they are no longer a sub-species.

How far inland have you seen them? I was in Tyrrell Co. not too long ago and found a DOR king that appeared to be a sticticeps.
