quick housing question

I am interested in raising 1.? garter snakes and was wondering about housing them together. I know the snakes should be similar size. My biggest concerns are unwanted/premature breeding. What age/size should they be before breeding is allowed? Maybe I should just stick with all females but the option to breed in the future is too tempting. Any advice is appreciated.
