Are the PVC pipes really necessary?

ex_action_figure Apr 28, 2004 11:12 PM

I have seen alot of set ups where people use the egg crates for a false bottom set up then they cut PVC pipes for pillars to hold up the egg crate
but if you are using gravel or something similar(like those little brown balls) what would happen if I just set the egg crate/screen on the balls?
would I still need the PVC pipe?
also if I do use PVC pipe shouldn't I drill small holes in the sides of the pipe so any water that drains down wont get trapped in the pipe?

A false-bottom (egg crate on top of spacers like PVC) are usually used instead of gravel or other drainage substrate. Your goal is to create an area for excess water to drain into from the soil. A false-bottom is good to use because it's a lot lighter than gravel. If you have a smaller terrarium and just use gravel followed by fiber glass window screening and then soil you should be fine. Good luck,
