ten gallon dart tank...

ex_action_figure Apr 28, 2004 11:27 PM

I have heard of people keeping darts in a 10 gallon tank
I would like to set up on in conjunction with my 30 gallon but I have a few questions
how many watts do you think would be necessary for keeping live moss and bromides (and a few other plants with similar requirements as bromides) in a ten gallon? should I go with a power compact or is there a florescent bulb I can use?(I know nothing about lights)

what type and how many darts can be kept in a 10 gallon?
I want to keep either tincs luecs or azures(i'm sure I didn't spell those right but you know what I am talking about) can I put one pair of those in a ten gallon? if so which would be the best choice?
also in a bit of an unrelated question which and how many would be the best choice in my 30 gallon long?

sorry for all the questions but I want my frogs to be happy
thanks
-Matt

Hi Matt,
Thankfully, 10 gallon aquariums are not only inexpensive, but they also can cater to MANY types of dart frogs, as well as many broms, moss, etc. I keep all of my Bri-Bri pumilio breeders in 10 gallon aquariums (a pair to each) and they've been doing very well for me. I have also kept various tincs, auratus, and azureus in 10 gallons tanks as well.
How MANY darts you keep in a tank depends much upon the particular species you are keeping. If you are housing froglets and juveniles, then you can keep about 1 to 3 tincs or azureus in a 10 gallon. What problem you may run into in the future, however, is when the frogs become sexually mature, then females of either species can and will fight (brutally, I might add!) So be prepared to separate your frogs (whichever species - tincs or azureus) if you notice fighting when they turn around a year old. Hopefully, you'll end up with a pair and you can put them in your 30 gallon! If you plan to house froglets in a 30 gallon, then I would suggest about 5 froglets (tincs or azureus). But, again, you WILL have to deal with the issue of female aggressivness in the future, so keep that in mind when setting up your frogroom! I hope this helped!

I know many people keep and breed in 10 gallons, but they have several down falls. They have to be cleaned alot. You have to have small plants. You will have to cut the plants alot. Not enough room for two of one sex to live in peace. Too short for misting nozzles (it works, but not good enough to replace the water in broms how it should). So closed in and little air circulation mold can grow quickly. Thats all just from my personal experiance. I have some 10 gallons that work great... while other last 2 weeks and need to be completely redone.

As for breeding pumilio in 10 gallons, that will work, but if you have enough money for pumilio you can spend a little more money and get a 20 for them. They will love you for it. You can put bigger broms in it.
