Garter mating in captivity?

utpike Apr 28, 2004 11:53 PM

I have a question. I have had an eastern garter since last fall and recently caught another. I just put them into the same cage today because i am moving soon and need to clean the other tank. They are now sitting on top of each other but their cloacas are not lined up. They are pulsating every few minutes and the pulses are running down the length of their bodies. I'm not sure of the sexes of either and the one i had in the fall was never brumated. What is the exact mating ritual of garters (without the mating balls)? If this is not a courtship ritual then what is it?

Sounds like courtship behavior to me. I've heard the male often 'pulses' like that to stimulate the female into mating. This occurs in mating balls as well, but it's a lot harder to see with all of those snakes Leave the two alone and you may be able to look forward to the pitter patter of little scales in your new home. Good luck!

Do both sexes have to be brumated in order for a successful mating? The female has been brumated, but my male has not been. The male was the one pulsating, so i'm guessing he has all he didnt need to be brumated. After mating, how many weeks/months approximately does it take for the babies to be born?
