imported cham question

jovcham Apr 29, 2004 08:12 AM

I've seen a few imports with funky lips. Its looks like callis around their mouth. they say it does not effect the animal in any way.

But what causes it? is there a way to correct it?

Where are you seeing these?

At a pet store? Of course it affects them. Swollen lips are not normal. It could be infection, which can always get worse and lead to a condition called "death". Sounds like someone is telling you that to make a sale.

no its not swolen lips, its dry skin, like callises on the outside around the lips. No its not a pet store, no one is trying to make a sale. How many imports have you seen? I've seen many like this, just wondering if there is anything that can be done about it or is it a perminate thing?

Ahh.. I see.

I've seen quite a few imports (at shows, and I worked in a pet store as one of the "reptile guys" for two years during college), but I can't recall this problem on any I've seen.

I suppose this could be treated with some of the shed-ease stuff, which is made to moisturize and promote healthy skin. I guess they get it from rubbing against
shipping containers or something. Of it's not broken skin, it may eventually go away with no problems, if the keeping conditions are right.

Most of the ones I've seen have been at shows, one or two from pics.

Shed ease? any pet store has this? is that all its called, brand name? is this safe to go around the mouth like that?

It has several names, but the products are similar. "Shed-aid" is one i think.
I'm sure any pet store selling reptile supplies would have some form of it.

I would think it would be ok to use a q-tip and swab the area, being careful to avoid ingestion. It may moisturize the area and get rid of the calouse, or at least help it look and feel better. Another option is maybe a little aloe vera (something very natural), again using special care not to let the Cham ingest any.
