Butterworms, superworms, large bowls and clueless geckos HELP

RedQuake Apr 29, 2004 08:13 AM

so ya my order included superworms and butterworms. They CAN and DO escape the bowls that i put my mealworms in so i've had to use deeper dishes.

BUT.......

Do ya think the geckos can grasp this??????? NOOOOOOOOOO

I'll have to go out and pick up a few bricks.... in one tank i've got a rock beside the dish and USUALLY if the geckos get up on it they can actually look down on the worms then eventually pick up on how to get at them. I'm thinking that if i put bricks (as i don't know where to pick up more rocks that have split in half and are stable to stand on) all around the bowls it'll raise up the geckos enough so that they can actually figure out how to get into it. All of these females are adults.....so ya they could actually just get into the bowls no problem. Just hasn't happened yet. LOL

Does anyone else have this problem, and what did you do to correct it?

Thanks
Red

Maybe you could just take a gecko and put it's front to legs in the bowl so that it can see what's in there and maybe it would remember. Not much help.

That is a good suggestion and yes i've tried that. Afew of the geckos clued in...and went right after the worms, others just freaked out and ran away. Those that did eat from this bowl must have forgotten the *oh i have to lift my head a bit* rule cause next time they go after the worms its from outside of the dish through the glass.......which doesn't work of course lol. I'm not sure exactly what to do at the moment other than raising the surrounding area with bricks/rocks and hoping that they figure it out.

Thanks,
Red

If I'm feeding worms, I like to put my gecko in a large CLEAN rubbermaid container with tall enough sides so the gecko doesn't get out. It takes them a minute to get the idea, but once they see wiggling it's chow time! It also gives me a chance to check on them.

Thats a good idea, only i have 9 females split up in two tanks. do i have to take each one out separate or can i put them all into a 10 gal tank and let them all eat at once?

Thanks,
Red

If they are all in the same tank, and getting along well, you can put them all in together. I have not had a problem yet, though I only do it rarely w/more than one @ a time. It's probably eventually going to happen that they go for the same one @ the same time. Not sure what would happen then. It's also more stressful if someone's climbing over you while you're trying to hunt down a meal. I have had problems if the container has just had another, stranger gecko in it (My 7 females are in 5 tanks right now) Also my male likes to rub his pores all over the container, and that doesn't really help the girls feel hungry!
Good luck!
