Please help! New Whites Tree Frog

Julie22 Apr 29, 2004 09:36 AM

I just got my first frog, a Whites tree frog. When I brought him home and put him in his tank he was a light shade of green. But by night, he was completely brown. Is this sudden color change normal? Could it be stress? Also, I noticed that on his back and legs, among the brown color is green spots of the color he originally was.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Okay. First off- Most frogs are able to change their colour. Some do change darker at night just for the sake of turning darker.

But it could very well be stress.

Is his habitat okay? Did you do enough research? Is his tank large enough?

He may just be upset, give him a week. Make sure he has food, fresh de-chlorinated water, and keep tabs on him. Clean any and all waste at LEAST once every two weeks... I wouldn't recommend doing it yet though until he feels he is at home.

If you need more help just go to Google.com and type in "White's Dumpy Tree Frog FAQ" or, instead of FAQ, try "Care Sheet" =)

Yes, I did lots of research about Whites. He lives in a 20 gallon high tank, lots of climbing branches and cork bark, low wattage (50) basking light over one corner of the tank... the daytime temp is around 80, and was 70 during lastnite. He did eat the 3 crickets I put in his cage lastnite.
I just never read anything about such a sudden color change, and was scared this was a red flag. A couple hours ago he had a couple green spots on his back and legs, contrastin the brown color. And now he's just all brown.
Thanks for your help
