I hope that saying california silkworms was great is not against any rules. Its just the truth, cheaper and when I ordered from mulberry I lost like 30% of the silkies. both orders from california combine I lost 1 silkie!

I've ordered from California silkworms in the past and would not hesitate to order from them again. Prompt shipment and excellent customer service. Here's a pic of Baby Skrilla enjoying one.

thanks for the suggestions guys

i actually just received a shipment from silkwormfarm.com with no fatalities

just wanted to check around mulberrys site to see if they had hissers for decent price

so far the cheapest ive found is 2 dollars per juvenile (my cham is too small to eat adults)

I also order from silkwormfarm.com on a regular basis, and have never had any problems. The orders get to me fast, and always with a good count, and he can provide the large amount of silkworms (1000's at a time) I need on a very consistent basis. He is also able to send very large-sized silkworms (in comparison), which is a major plus for me, since I am always looking for the biggest I can get.

did Joe at silkwormfarm.com stop selling silkies?

John at califwormies sure has nice silkies. Even when he was ishipfast on ebay he had nice product. Far better than mulberryfarm's product. I am getting ready to order me some more silkies from John this week.

This is nothing against the person mentioned aboved but where do you think everyones founding stock came from?
How do you kow mulberry farms stock is bad?
Anyone who knows silkworms recognizes they need to be kept in clean sanitized conditions. If some die check the conditions you keep them.
It's fine to buy from him buy why the need to try and make Mulberry farms sound like they are bad.
Everytime your chameleons eats those silkworms remember where they originated.

I don't know where his stock originated from but.
He is always courteous, His customer service is better than any feeder company I have dealt with in the past.
His silkworms come in bigger than any others I have ever bought.
They don't die off like others I have bought in the past.
(I have lost hundreds of dollars in the past and have bought from them all)
Maybe it is his stock or maybe his customer service in helping me keep them alive.
Whenever I have had a problem he has cheerfully offered to replace them even though it was heat related. (I am in FL)
Whatever it is my animals have never been healthier and I have saved tons of money since using his company.
Not to mention he is a regular poster here. Why buy from a stranger when you can purchase from a fellow cham guy.
I give his company a big thumbs up!

jusmebabe Apr 29, 2004 08:41 PM

Maybe the vision is going. Did I say say anything bad about him? NO.
Since your not clear where people got them from it was Mulberryfarms so your kidding youtself about the quality.
Last but not least, If you like one over the other great but don't disparage someone in order to compliment another it looks tacky.
Notice how John is not knocking MF it's called tact.
I am glad to see someone excited about silkworms though.

No one should say anything bad about anyone here unless it's really serious. Big deal, you lost a couple insects. Maybe you really weren't sterile about the whole thing. I've bought from Mulberry before and had good success. Lost a couple, but that was because I handled them. You honestly can't clean the enclosure or anything. Silkworms are extremely sensitive to bacteria. If you have to pick them up, use sterile, disposable gloves.

He also has good prices on wholesale hornworms.

If you're looking for good hisser prices, the best way to save any money is to buy in bulk and start your own colony. Topline has the best prices on hissers I've seen. Starting at 15 for 15, going to 300 for 225 or something like that.

...even if the original stock did in fact come from Mulberry Farms, after a generation or two it is the current producer that impacts the health of their stock. And, regardless of the level of expertise there will always be some loss or a bad "batch." I have had experience raising luna, cecropia, polyphemus and other Saturnid moths for 6 years and no matter how ideal their care I always suffer some loss - it's just nature.

Granted, there is more control over silkworms (Bombyx) than Giant Silk Moths (Saturniidae) b/c they are reared exclusively at the hands of humans whereas the giant silks are either collected and/or wild paired.

Just food for thought

Thanks for kind words!

The main reason I got into silkworms was because I could never get the right sizes for my chams. I was filling a void for my own collection... things just kinda started from there.

In my opinion, Brian (from MulberryFarms) is one of the nicest guys I have ever met in the pet trade. ( Nice enough to really take notice )

I don't think my silkworms are any better than anyone else's.. everyone offering silkworms just puts their own touch on them.. I sell silkworms the way I would buy silkworms..

To answer someone question, I am still selling them. Since the MulberryFarms site went down, I got swamped. I stopped doing my kingsnake ads for the time being si I can keep up.

I was a cham guy long before I was a silkworm guy..

mmmmhmmmm. I agree, the poster does seem to come off as someone with A) either alot of stress and or B) just a mean angry person.

It could be just the way the person types though and they are not intending to make it look like someone ready to get into a knock down with anyone...
