Male or Female-Pics of Tail

BrianT Apr 29, 2004 12:00 PM

I can't figure out if this one is a male or female. I had ordered 0.2, but I think this one is probably male. He has male coloration and measures a good 15". What throws me off is his lack of bulges and he has what would appear to be old scars where I would expect them to be on a breeder female from the male scratching. Any help is appreciated.

Its hard to tell in the pics. Seem kinda fuzzy. But just from the coloring (very black head, tail, and legs) it is most likely a male. Only time it would not be is if its a female mimicing a male (which happens from time to time).

Just looking at him (and he looks JUST ilke mine!) I'd guess male.....

I just got word back from the dealer and he said he sent out 0.2, but to double check the femoral pores. I was told the femoral pores on females are smaller. Going by that, I'd say this is just one good sized, nicely colored female. Her femoral pores are even smaller than the definate female that came in with her. As I mentioned, she also appears to have some scarring from previous mating attempts. Anybody else wanna throw in their thoughts?
Thanks,
Brian

the picture is not verry clear, but femoral pores seems verry small to me and i dont seem any hemipenal bulge from under the tail, i would say thats a female. i have 2 dark brown(near black) and yellow females, so i dont like to rely on coloration to deermin sex....reptiles shop had tell me i had 2 males....i trusted them and tryed to breed them with females...lol

Hey Jay,
I was rather surprised when I compared this girl to the other one and realized she was definately a female, infact I'm still not convinced. This one is black and yellow and the yellow even continues on to her belly. Not to mention, she's huge. From what I've read, even going by male mali uromastyx standards, this is a good sized animal at an easy 15". I pray she is a female as I bet she'll turn out some BEAUTIFUL babies, plus she's extremely tame, something I can't say for the other two uros I have, one of which goes as far as biting.
Thanks for your thoughts,
-Brian

BrianT,
Given its spring time, a mature male will be secreting a waxy substance from the femoral pores. It is my understanding that only males produce this type of waxy substance during the breeding months. If there is no wax protruding, I would say you have a female.
Hope this helps you in determining the sex. Best of luck with your new specimens.

Best regards,

Carson

Going by your second picture, I was told that the two lines going from the vent up the tail, on the underside, on a male animal are in the shape of an H with no mid line, in other words, straight bulges. On females they form a V with the wide angle at the vent and narrowing up the tail. From that description, I'd have to go with female! Great coloring, Too!!!
