New Russian Tortoise doesn't move.

eshuhood Apr 29, 2004 12:23 PM

I received a russian tortoise. He does not move much. One of his eyes barely opens and the other opens a little. He mouth opens for a few seconds then closes. He only takes one of two steps at a time. Is he sick, or do some tortoises act like this after being shipped? I know he needs to see the vet anyway since i just got him, But i was wondering if this is normal, if the reptile store shipped him like this, and anything i can do to help him, i read it could be a vitinam A defincy, or penmonia. He also doesn't eat.

Go to www.russiantortoise.org and read up on care and maintenance of russian tortoises.

The tort could be recovering from being shipped. It could be sick. It could be too cold/too hot/dehydrated/full of worms/etc.

A qualified veterinarian with reptile experience can help you figure that out. Be sure to take a fecal sample. Ask your vet for details on that.

In the mean time, try soaking the tortoise in a tub with maybe 1" of lukewarm water. This will help it rehydrate and maybe defecate. Let it soak about 10-15 minutes.

Be sure the tortoise has a warm basking area of around 90-100F, and a cooler area to hide where the temps are maybe 70-80F.
