Vet report

Sohni Apr 29, 2004 01:39 PM

Took Baxter into the vet today (my regular herp vet). All in all, the vet said he was in pretty good condition. His beak and claws are a little long, but the vet felt that they will probably wear down now that Baxter is outside in more natural conditions. His eyelids are a little swollen, but again, the vet thought it wasn't too bad and probably due to poor diet and should improve. He was a little concerned that he isn't more active (still burying himself most of the day), so I'm bringing him back for a recheck in 2 weeks, and hopefully by then will have had a fecal done so the vet can give him some meds via stomach tube.

Today Baxter ate 3 worms, a slug, and 2 snails (all I could find...wouldn't you know it, the garden's crawling with 'em until I need some, lol), so I'm very hopeful that he will do well in time. I want to thank all of you for the help you've given me, and Baxter thanks you, too!

its good hes eating. dont forget to feed him about half plants and half meats. he can get vitamin deficency from not eating plants that have alot of vitamins in them. mine love mushrooms and red lettuce and all kinds of fruit, other things too.

and keep him humid and soak him everyday. dry air is the biggest thing that causes swollen eyes. its the first thing to look at, moisture. real important in box turtles

I think the moisture level in his pen is OK--half of it has about 4" of soil and compost, with a layer of straw over that, and it all gets sprayed down every day. I'm trying to be careful, because the summers here do get dry. He also has plenty of shade, and sun on part of the pen for about 3 hours a day (about 11-2).

He doesn't seem to be showing much interest in anything but live foods right now, although he did nibble a little banana last night. I'm putting out a dish of chopped fruit and veggies daily, though, just in case. I imagine he'll come around eventually. Poor guy's had it rough before this. He must be amazed just being outside, lol.
