Question about my FBT

RomAo26 Apr 29, 2004 02:56 PM

Hey Guys! I am new here and new to the whole Toad thing. My question is... How much should I feed my Toad and how often should I feed him? The people at the pet store are young and really dont seem to know the answers to these questions. As of now my toad is eating an incredible amount of Crickets and no matter how much I feed him he never seems full. I am scared of over feeding and such so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.

well from what i've been told. that they will eat whatever you give them.. even if it means gourging. if they are still young id recomend maybe 3 or 4 cricekts every 2 to 3 days. If they oever eat the food in the stomach can start to decompose faster than they can digest and cause gas that may be fatal. If your toad looks bloated... he needs to go on a diet.

Thank you SO much for the quick response...I really appreciate it. I have to say pigging out is definately his speciality and therefore that diet is defiantely in order. I hope he doesnt get mad at me...jk! Thanks again.

One more thing I thought you should be aware of if you didn't already know. Fire bellies are slightly toxic. Not to harmful to humans but sometimes people can get a rash from them. You may notice when they are scareed they will flaten their backs which releases the toxin. So be sure when you handle them to wash your hands before you come into contact with any bodily orifice. Or you might be up all night with some problems. But these are some of my most adorded amphibians. they are so fun to watch and they have a lot of personality.

Thank you for all the great info...you have helped me SO much! I have one more question for you though...I just recently purchased my second toad and everything I read said that more than one FBT together would be fine, but for some reason my original toad seems to be attacking the other one like its food or something. Is this a natural response to a new toad or is something wrong? Thanks for the imput.

If he's trying to eat it then no it's not good. But occationaly my toads have a wrestling match. If they are both doing it and making a lot noise that means they are males. It happens when you put two toads from different birth groups together. They just have a diffrent smell and the toads think each other are female. They get confused because its as hard for them to tell as it is for us. Plus it's just one trying to asert it's dominance in the tank. they should be fine.

That way you can tell if your new arrival has any disease and prevent it from infecting your current collection. It's a standard practice for all reptiles.

Hey there I read your post and I have some advice for you. Of course some people may disagree with what a say, but everyone does things differently.
I have 12 toads in a 50 gallon tank and I give them about 75 crickets once a week. I love watching them eat...they are maniacs!!
Toads are not like goldfish (who are apparantely so stupid that they will eat themselves to death). I notice when my toads are full. They will even let a cricket walk all over them and in front of them and they won't touch it.
When I got my first three toads the people at the pet store told me that they would eat 5 crickets a day EACH!!!! What a waste of crickets that was! But you know what, some of my guys will eat 10 of those crickets that I put in, and some others will only eat a few (remember, this is once a week feeding). I have found that they each have thier own personalities, some are more active, some more layed back. They have their own eating habits as well.
My advice to you is to just watch your toads. Get a feel for each one. If he wants to eat 4 crickets a day, then so be it.
Oh, and about the toads 'fighting'...I wouldn't worry about it either. My toads don't do that anymore, but they used to. Now they just try to hump eachother all the time!!!
Good luck with your babies!!!
