Rusty red eastern garter

Webdragon8 Apr 29, 2004 03:16 PM

Found this critter today on a hike, never seen one this red before around here (Albany, NY). Would anyone be able to help in determining the sex of this one? I'm pretty bad at that :P Anyway he/she is missing their right eye, I felt sympathetic towards it so they'll get a good meal or two from me before I send them back on their way.

I have found many " rusty " garters on Long Island early in the season because many of them brumate in old water pipes that have a layer of rusty water in them. Once the shed they look normal again.By the way that looks like a female you are holding.

Very interesting, I know this one does have very large black circles on its skin, but the skin itself is also red towards the belly scales. I suppose I'll have to wait until she sheds! And yes I have confirmed that she is a she, after a quarantine I had a meet-and-greet with my other garters, and my male red sided went into a frenzy trying to mate with her, heh! She didn't seem interested in the least though, perhaps already mated? Only time will tell I suppose. Thank you both for your info!
