Harnessing my tegu...

Ghost425 Apr 29, 2004 07:29 PM

How do you guys take your tegus out for fresh air? I have heard that the little reptile leashes are dangerous and easy for tegus to slip out of. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Ian

I was just wondering the same thing. My Arg. B&W is 32" long and I to was wondering what the best form of restraint would be. Has anyone used small dog harnesses? I have seen them on large monitors, so why not a tegu .

My little buddy is too small to harness just yet, but from the advice I have been given from this forum, you can go buy one of those small elastic ropes and a barrel clip (like you would find on a wind breaker jacket or something). You just secure this around their neck if it a big male because the large jowels will stop the leesh from coming loose. For juvies and females its probably best to put the leeshe around their waist, because the back legs and big fat belly will stop it from moving. SOmebody has a good picture, but i can't remember who. Hopefully they'll stop by an post a pic.

It's not a Tegu but here's a photo of a hip leash on a smaller Rhino Iguana. These work well for Tegus over 18 inches.

Petco carries a harness designed for guinea pigs and ferrets. It's a vest, of sorts, which fits over their back & shoulders with a strap in front of the arms, and another one behind the shoulders. It has velcro straps, and also adjustable clips & straps for added security. Cool colors, and even comes with a little elastic leash for around $7.00. Look in the gerbil/guinea pig/small animal supplies section.

This is adjustable, but won't fit securely over small (less than 24" tegus. Our largest one is just less than that, and he is able to back out of it if he really tries. But it's a pretty good harness, not restricting, and looks great on them- kind of a bright, yellow & orange Hawaiian pattern.

Hope that helps.
