thin white worms on glass

jaso Apr 29, 2004 10:46 PM

I know this question has been asked before, but i never bother to read it since it did not concern me. Well, i should have because now i have the same problem. I have these thin hair-like worms crawling on the glass of one of my tank. Anyone remember what these were and if they were of any harm to my frogs? A picture of them were posted on here awhile back, but i cant seem to find it. Thanx in advance.

Hi Jason,
What you may be dealing with are grindal worms. Sometimes these guys can hitch a ride through homemade recipe fruitfly cultures or in springtail cultures. If the cultures are placed in the vivarium, that can sometimes cause a bloom in your terrarium. The only bad thing about grindals is that if have a VERY large number of them in your viv, it can not only be unsightly and gross, but if the grindals are desperate for food, then can eat clutches of eggs. I've had this experience a few times with pumilio clutches. The grindals stay primarily close to or on the side of glass, and if a clutch of eggs is touching the glass, the grindals will usually find it. I sometimes find these worms in petri dishes in my azureus tank as well, but it's been quite some time since I've seen them in the pumilio tanks. Hope this helps.
