Hey CHRIS, or someone else experienced with plastics.

would this be a suitable plastic to use for shelves in a rack system? It would be reenforced with 2x4s in front and back (and perhaps the middle if need be).

The link did not load but I did see the acrynym "HDPE" on the status bar as it was loading. So I assume the product on the page is high-density polyethylene.

1/2" HDPE is what is used by the racks from Chameleon chondo/Animal Plastics. A local petstore just ordered two of their racks and I stopped by to look at them last week. The material is very nice. Should be easy to clean and stay true over time. However, it is not very light.

I'm not sure that it's the best material for a do-it-yourselfer, though. The material is perfect for the CC/AP racks that were designed to be easily assembled and easy to ship so the HDPE is perfect for them. However, if you're building an already heavy rack at home melamine will save you a lot of money.

I will be building the rack from mainly 2x4s so it will be haevy, I don't like malimine at all, would use sealed plywood before malimine, but I was going to use expanded PVC for the shelves, but I can't seem to find it anywhere around me (haven't looked too hard yet though). I am in SE Michigan if anyone knows a distributor close. I just saw that and wondered if it would work. My basic plan looks like tthee one replied to my post a few down, mostly 2x4s but I don't want to use peg board like hje did I was going to use thee PVC.
