feeding a small turtle, overfeeding?

dagangsta Apr 30, 2004 06:28 AM

ok, so heres the deal, i went away over the weekend, (btw i have a res that is about 1.5-2 inch) yea, so i had my mom buy 36 rosey's to hold him off till i got back, well two thigns, first off, the guy at the store was like you aren't gonna feed these all at once are you, my mom was just like no, cuz she had no clue and didn't feel like putting up with crap from the guy, so yea, she got em home, put em in the tank and he ate every last one of them, that day, so eya, i'm just wondering first off, how mucha turtle that size should be eating, and if i should just be feeding him as much as he'll eat
thanks a lot

He should be fed more than an amount that would fit inside his head once per day. They will eat as much as you give them normally, but it isn't healthy for them.

I think dsngrl meant to say they should be fed NO more than an amount that would fit inside his head. And when it gets a little older (1yr) you should only feed that much every other day. Of course, his head will be bigger then. Offer greens all the time, just throw some dandelion greens or a leaf of romaine in the tank and it will disappear eventually. That way you won't feel like you are starving him.

you should be feeding a variety of foods not just feeder fish they need a varied diet like pellet food some vegies he will groew alot faster if he has a varied diet i feed my 4 res turtle pellets feederfish[as a treat] and when they accept them various types of veggies. they hatched last summer and are now almost as big as my breeding male that i have had for over 15 years

Fast growth isn't a good thing, turtles should only grow an inch or so a year. If they grow that fast they are at risk for kidney and shell problems.
