Feeding babies

NateDiggity Apr 30, 2004 08:09 AM

I recently hatched my first baby from my original pair. I waited till after the first shed to introduce mealies. The baby doesn't seem to be interested at all. Should I be worried its been a few days, or should I just wait it out. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nate

I wouldn't be worried about it. Mine did the same thing. If you are worried you could try pinhead crickets. I know mine started eating after that. Good Luck!!

For best results with babies:

1. House them in a small enclosure ... plastic shoe-boxes are ideal.

2. 1 Warm, dry hide. 1 Cool hide. 1 warm humid hide.

3. After the lights go out, put in a low (1/2 an inch or so), wide clear plastic container with 10 or so mealies in it. For the first 2 weeks I give freshly shed (white) mealies since they are softer.

4. Leave them alone. (I find babies are very nervous and jumpy and will eat mealies out of a bowl overnight if left alone with them).

Within a few weeks they'll gain the confidence to eat right after you put the bowl in and you'll get to watch them.

Don't forget to alternate dusting with calcium and vitamins every day for the first 6 months or so.

Regards,
Joel

I have never had a healthy hatchling starve itself because it didn't like mealworms.

As a 5 day old baby who has never eaten, he will be hungry and not very picky. He'll eat whatever's smaller then him and squirming and in front of him.

Crix will work just as well as mealies as a leos first food but some (including myself and Ron Tremper) consider them a pain and feed mealies exclusively.

If the original poster doesn't care, then you just pick either crix or mealies or both as first feeders. However, if you don't want to deal with crickets, my suggestions above for feeding mealworms to a hatchling will work.

I said some leos dont like mealworms. I never said you shouldn't try to feed them mealworms...

That no hatchling leo would refuse mealworms from the get-go.

A leo that's been feeding for years on crix might give you a hard time switching to mealies, but I don't think a healthy hatchling would be that picky.
