Pre birth shed question

BillLubak Apr 30, 2004 08:30 AM

Is there a correlation between shed and when my girls will drop? I have several het for calicos that are ready to drop soon. I thought one was going to go, basking, laying on her side a lot and cruising the cage. Then she went into a shed again. I know there is a correlation with regular boas. Any help would be appreciated. Bill

Bill,
. I keep fairly good records of when my snakes eat and shed and breed and lay babies. I have found no way to predict when BRBs will lay babies based on dates of shedding. They can shed two, three or four times while gravid and I have had them even lay while opaque.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff. They are weird animals compared to "normal" boas. I've raised these from babies for the past 4 years. They even eat while in shed! I guess I'll just have to wait until she drops, and hopefully with some "calicos". She is HUGE and acting very peculiar so I expect she will drop soon.

I also have a hets calico pair from Sharp but I think your babies are going to look all normal, you will have to keep them for the first year to start noting the white spots, is calico like a progresing morphs, right? well i do not know if I'm using the right words, but have any of you seen a babie calico of any species?

I think there is something very different going on with the "calico" trait with Brazilians. I originally had 3.5 that I purchased and traded from Brian. I did a trade with one pair and I now have 2.3. I lost my shirt a few years back on a calico retic project so I am very leary of any calico traits. As I explained to Brian when I talked with him, think about it, most calicos that have been found have all been females. This is especially true with retics, only one male that I know of. I told Brian, you have the only "calico" Brazilian and its a male! I also told him I didn't like the name calico because I still had a bad taste in my mouth from the time and money I wasted on the retic project. He said he called them that for lack of a better name. I also told him that if I produce them first that I am changing the name to "Snowflake Brazilians" (kinda catchy huh!). Look at the "fungi" ball pythons, they turned out co-dom. We'll we know that it's not a dom or co-dom trait, but I stongly feel its going to be proved recessive. There have been two (that I am aware of) brazilians with a lesser degree of white caught in the same area that were imported. I missed buying one by about 10 minutes! I thought that I would have produced last year. Some of the females got big and then nothing! One female in particular is showing all signs and actions of a gravid female and should drop soon. I have my fingers crossed! I thought she was going to go last week, rolling on her side to the point of being almost upside down. She seemed to be having contractions too. I was so convinced that I had the cameras ready and sat by the cage biting my nails and chain smoking! And nothing, she went into another shed, hence my shedding question here. This will be the first place I post pics if it happens. Who knows, line breeding may bring out other recessive triats that they may be carrying too. By the way, that is one awesome albino you have! Good luck with all your projects. Bill Lubak

Beleive me, I really thought this one out before I got into another "calico" project. After I convinced myself, I bought as many hets from Brian as I could afford at the time! I pretty sure my theory will hold water. I keep checking the cage because I want to catch the birth on film. Good luck with your projects, Bill
