Bio balls are a filter medium, you need a canister filter that can hold them, or a biological filter, which is a second tank that the water is filtered through. My RES sometimes play with their cuttlebone or the bubbles from the filter, but they really don't get bored.

I don't know what Bio balls are, but as for toys...a friend of mine gave me a little turtle bobbleheader. When I sat it on my desk and the turtle saw it, he got all excited, and he likes to watch it. Maybe one of those drinking birds?

I gave my two RES a ping pong ball. They played with it (biting it back and forth) for quite awhile. It's much bigger than their heads, so I wasn't worried about them eating it.

some great toys for res`s are LIVE FOOD!!! they love to chase the food in the tank. its interesting to watch them stalk down a fish too.
